Mel Collie | How To Feel Lighter

Mel Collie | How To Feel Lighter

When was the last time you felt light?

I don’t mean lighter as in weight, so don’t go jumping on the scales…they are for dieters and we all know restriction leads to your body going completely in the other direction..

I actually mean lighter in your life

When was that?

When did you last feel bubbly inside, like those Vitamin tablets that dissolve in a  glass of water , bubbles fizzing away, when did you last do something that left you feel like that, all effervescent

inside , interested, curious,excited.

What were or are those little patches of light or sparkle?

What was the last thing you were curious about, that you wondered about.

It could be such a small thing, its almost not even worth bothering about, in fact you probably ignore it altogether.

I have one right now

I have a curiosity about macro photography. Everyone I follow on Twitter has been doing grand landscapes..but some are doing different stuff, I’m fascinated by ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) and Multiple Exposures, shots that makes you think and you remember, not photos that tell you what is there already with pretty colours and stuff and you forget a second later…Im curious about macro shots, small stuff, detail, microscopic photography, I have a patch of light about it, a sparkle or interest. I spent hours researching it yesterday afternoon..its sparked my curiosity

Now what not to do is to tell yourself its silly, its nothing grand and wont win you the lottery or make you ££££, because thats a sure fire way too kill ideas before they have even had a chance, its a sur fire way to kill any passion..

But , what if you just to followed it

See where it lead you..

You have no clue why you feel these little patches of light

But they just feel good

It feels right

If you don’t follow it, if you don’t listen to it, then you may just be depriving the world a glimpse of the human being that is you. Even if it touches one person.

Even if that person is just you

If you were not afraid of anything, nothing, not afraid of other peoples judgements or of your own (and that can be huge!) then what would you do for a living?

What excites you, what grabs your curiosity…what do you wonder about?

It my just be those little sparks of light that are you, become meaningful, become your passion..which could just change your happiness , wellness and even your life, without you even trying to steer the ship

You are following your sparks of light.

Mel Collie | Is stress a positive thing?

Mel Collie | Is stress a positive thing?

Stress.. a warning sign to the mind thats something wrong in the data set. The mind looked inside itself and said..hey, whats going on..one of the filing cabinets is open and is not neat and tidy in here, its unorganised, its messy….whats happening?

Stress…the minds inability to be able to solve the situation..the minds constantly housekeeping, every second its checking the files..all the data, making sure its all in place, organised, and stress is where the mind says , this isn’t right, its not supposed to be like this.

You’ve hit a point, theres something you don’t agree with, its not that somethings actually WRONG, its just that you don’t agree with whats going on..

So, is stress a positive thing?

Is it an illusion..have we created the stress we know today, modern stress?

Well, your mind creates a state of feeling , you have a moan at yourself, because you don’t have anyone else to moan to.

We judge ourselves, often speaking to ourselves the way you would never allow a friend to speak to us.

We then internalise whatever it is we don’t agree with and it manifests as stress

The external stuff can be things like being stuck in a job you hate, not having the latest fashions, not having a new car, unable to afford to go abroad or buy new shoes or the latest laptop or newest mobile.

All these thoughts and processes bubble over in our minds.

We have an inability to recognise the data, our brains cant organise it, so we then get stressed..

We cant work it out

We haven’t got the answer

So we row with the self

Instead of…accepting it

When  your body is thirsty you need water..it the bodies last attempt to get water, to get your attention to drink and hydrate.

Stress is mental thirst, bubbling over with information that your mind cant put it into a neat pile, it goes into hyperdrive in terms of intellectual responses, so you over think and over analyse. as the brain throws information at every situation, it cant put it into boxes, making it neat and tidy, organised. Our 10,000 year old ancestors reacted instinctively to the growing stimulus and fought or ran from the tiger/lion/melting volcano.

Now we have invented issues we call stress – the mobile fell down the loo, cant find the car keys, cant get a six pack, the person in the office has a belly is flatter than yours, the office isn’t tidy, the trousers aren’t ironed properly…etc etc…

If you react often to situations like these they can be an indicator to where the real problems are in your life.

They are all invented problems that aren’t a threat to our survival, like the caveman running from the tiger.

So, maybe we  have to just accept thats what happening, realise it ..an accept it..

So, how can we begin to quieten the mind and release some of the stress we feel?

Ways to de stress

  • Quiet time is so important, especially with the constant noise from social media. Quiet time helps our mind to strip back the information that is not necessary.
  • Breathing slow and deep – 10 times – repeat 4 times a day.
  • Go for a walk on the beach/woodland/mountains/park
  • Have a bath – no one is allowed to disturb you
  • Read a book that stimulates your mind away from the glossing over stuff like how the latest celeb lost a zillion stone and how their wash board stomach makes them happy ..
  • Challenge yourself – do something that scares you…go climbing (believe me..that will really get you going..), go scrambling, go for a run, book yourself into something you have to work towards like a marathon, learn something new, spend a night out wild camping and look at the stars ..
  • Spend less time on social media and more time meditating, which doesn’t mean you war orange robes and sit for hours at a time, it can be as simple as just a minute a day, doing something that grabs your curiosity – like playing the guitar for example..

However, ultimately, to accept it, realise that you have situations that are stressful to you, and ask why, notice the knock on effects, how you can change your beliefs.

Mel Collie | 3 Ways To Relax

Mel Collie | 3 Ways to Successfully Relax

Relax your shoulders.

What just happened then?

Did they drop, were you more aware that your shoulders were up by your ears?

Or did it not change anything at all, which is ok, there is no wrong or right.

Some of us are visual learners, some kinesthetic, some auditory, and some of us are a mixture of all of those.

Which is why, if you have ever been to a fitness class, pilates or yoga session, and were told to relax by the instructor and you found that you couldn’t, it could be that you just aren’t an auditory learner.

Maybe a light touch to your shoulders would help, maybe a cue you can imagine feeling “imagine your armpits are feeling heavy, dropping down to meet your hips”, maybe you would love to see it happen I another person and the penny would drop, you would the get it, and follow along.

If you knew how to relax you would do it, right?

Why would you choose to be tense, wound up tight like a spring?

Yet day to day we continue to be tight, tense, clenched jaw, tight hips, lifted shoulders.

Here are 3 ways you can un coil yourself, un wind and let go of that tension

  1. Place your hands on your lower belly, and breath in, push into the hands, push that belly out as much as you can. Pause. Then breathe out as much as you can, as the belly comes away from the hands, and towards your spine. Repeat 10 times, 4 times a day. (not only does it calm your brain, it also helps switch on your deep core muscles, a bonus!)
  2. Give yourself permission to have a walk today. Not just to work or home again, but a walk somewhere different. Maybe to the park, to the woods, to the beach, somewhere where there are trees, flowers, plants, water, somewhere you can see and feel nature. Just a few moments here. That’s all you need. If your time is short, take a different way to work or home, rather than rushing and not seeing anything,, look up, look around, take note of the tress and the sky, the clouds, the sun, the rain, the wind, the leaves. There are many studies carried out in Japan on the benefits of relieving stress by using a technique they call “Tree Bathing”, which is just walking in nature, to help reduce stress, to help manage the stresses of modern life.
  3. Sleep . Switching off the laptop/mobile/i-pad an hour before you are going to bed makes a lot of difference. It helps your brain unwind, your eyes relax, your body can begin to relax and get ready for sleep. Having a bath, reading a book, meditating for 10 minutes, all help relax the mind, which helps relax the muscles in the body.

These days we work out, we train, we push ourselves, which is good for the body and we love the results working out brings.

When we understand that working out is also a stress on the body, we can overdo training on top of an already stressed out body, we place relaxation close to the bottom of the list of things to do.

Which is a shame as we are missing out on a trick here.

Doing less, relaxing more, giving ourselves permission to have more happiness, a calmer brain actually helps us find more strength, reduce body fat and have a healthier nervous system.

Starting with the boss of your body, your brain, can be the novel way to look at working out, giving you the edge, giving you inner strength, which always shows on the outside.

Mel Collie | Can You Relax Away The Belly Fat?

Mel Collie | Can You Relax Away The Belly Fat?

Did you know, theres a hormone called Cortisol that increases in our bodies when we are more anxious, worried, stresesd, sleep less?  Did you know that stressing when you are eating is like eating with a bowl of soup laden with cortisol?

That means, if you are on a diet, and restrictive eating, and hating it , you are more than likely to find that results are slow coming, that belly fat isnt budging.

How can you lower those cortisol levels? Try these 2 simple ways…

1. Relax (I know, you dont have time and relaxing is for wimps…)

A couple of years ago, I went through a relationship break up and  wanted to go away for a while. I chose to jump in at the deep end , going on a beginners weekend silent meditation retreat in Devon at Gaia House that a friend recommended.

It was bliss….just what I needed.

Fear puts us off doing so many things doesn’t it? For me, the silence aspect meant I didn’t have to talk to anyone. I quite liked that! Especially as you were sharing a room with 2 other people, if I didn’t like them I didn’t have to be nice all weekend…as we were all being quiet, and all there with the same aim. meditation doesnt have to be like that though, it can be choosing to do something you love every day, like taking 10 – 20 minutes to go for a walk, play a musical instrument, have a bath, read a chapter of a book, have a nap, go for a massage.

2. Eat. Take your time eating …it can take time to prepare meals (the prep time is also like a meditation, calming, social, methodical), but it can take a few moments to demolish, watching the TV, looking at a lap top, texting , driving. .not noticing the food we’ve just eaten.  Instead, take 20 minutes and chew the food really slowly. Look at the food on the plate, notice the colours, the textures, when you chew notice the flavours, the spices, the textures.

Choose simplicity : )

By taking time to calm down, to find how you would like to meditate you give yourself permission to be just you for a moment, you can pick up your worries and stressors afterwards if you feel like you cant live without them and need them.

That is your choice. We all have a choice what to pick up and what to put down.

Some choose to meditate quietly every day for 15 – 60 minutes, morning  and evening, some feel they can’t start their day without this routine or the day becomes a tangled mess.

No, don’t you think that they started their routine somewhere. They didn’t jump in at 60 minutes of silence and just have a clear mind.

They probably don’t ever achieve a clear mind, it’s always jumping about.

It takes practice, and practice always stays at just that, practice, you don’t want to reach perfection, as no ones perfect, maybe in your mind you think that other people are because you see yourself as not quite there yet and judge yourself.

You don’t want to be perfect.

(Get used to that thought….)

You just want to released from what isn’t serving you right now, the baggage you carry everyday thats weighing you down and making your life not as amazing as you would love it to be, as you can make it be.

So, start slow and small, just one step, with the mindful eating, watching yourself, watching your habits.

We all learned how to drive in a car park or a quiet side road, not on a busy Motorway on a  Monday morning, That would have put you off and the Insurance company would have had heart failure : )

Take time to focus on something as simple as your breathing during the day, at your break times at work.

Notice how you feel.

Notice how you are just here in the present moment, not the past, not the future, just now.

Notice that you are not lacking a thing.

Notice how you don’t have to acquire anything.

Notice that you are already right here where you need to be.

Notice that if your mind wanders that it is OK

As soon as you notice it has wandered, you are back here in the present moment, and you can address it and focus on your breathing again, simples!

Theres no judgement, there’s no telling off, there’s no shouting and feeling you are wrong, there’s just you and your breath.

Enjoy your stillness and calm.

Mel Collie | My Top Diet Tip

Mel Collie | My Top Diet Tip

Have you seen the date? Its not only nearly Christmas, its not that long to New Years Eve and those New Years Resolutions.

Most of us are already aiming to joining a  gym or workout more in Januarys after eating all those goodies over the holidays. Those “New Year New You” adverts will start to come out, though whatever would inspire you not to be you in the first place is beyond understanding, because you are you, and thats unique, how lovely is that?  Anyway…

With that in mind , this is my nos 1 top Diet tip, that I use all the time since I started teaching Bootcamps a couple of years ago, studied meditation, studied nutrition, studied neuroscience, read all the books I could get my hands on that covered all those things as if I was trying to find the answer .

Theres so many diet types out there, so many people telling us to eat this, eat that, dont drink that, dont eat that, take this supplement, dont do that exercise, dont meditate, do meditate, etc etc…makes you stop and change all the time, your inner self has no idea whats going on and is very confused, so gives up and tells you its digging its heels in until you stop messing about and do something it can understand.

This is it…are you ready…drum roll…

1. Be Happy .

Thats it

Did you groan then and look up to the heavens?

Good 🙂

So , imagine a person who goes to the gym in January, trains hard, works hard, feels pulled from all directions, hates working out, stands at the back of the class because they dont feel they fit in with the “clicky” crew at the front of the class, feels awkward in the gym, doesnt really know what to do but beats themselves up

the joy you feel moving towards your potential

Joy experience in ups and down.

when the crap happens

when the sleep doesnt come

when the cravings happen

when the dips stay

its all growth

Happiness isnt all red roses and smiles and rainbows.

The crap is all a part of your path.

Embrace it, step back and see it for what it is.
